About Aterfa

Hi, I’m Jo, founder and therapist behind Aterfa.

My approach to bodywork is shaped by both professional and personal experience. After 20 years working in the corporate creative world, I understand the mental fatigue, tension headaches, and postural strain that can come from long hours at a desk and the constant demands of modern working life. As an active tennis player and road cyclist, I also understand the recovery needs that come with training, repetition, and physical performance.

Today, I bring this perspective together with advanced training in clinical bodywork to offer thoughtful, tailored treatments that support recovery, mobility, and wellbeing. Rather than treating tension in isolation, I look at the lifestyle behind it and create treatments that respond to what your body needs most.

There is also a more personal story behind Aterfa.

I grew up in South Korea in a family shaped by movement and physical discipline. My father was passionate about bodybuilding, my older brother was an elite baseball player, and my late mother was trained in Korean Hand Acupuncture. She also lived with a herniated disc for many years. Growing up, I was often asked to massage my family’s arms, legs, shoulders, and back. While informal at the time, those early experiences gave me an instinctive awareness of the body and a sensitivity to muscular tension and discomfort.

Alongside this, I began playing classical piano at the age of eight. Decades of practice developed a deep sense of touch, precision, and articulation, training my hands to be highly perceptive. This is something I continue to rely on in my work today.

I have always found something deeply special in offering massage to family and friends. It calls on me to care deeply, to listen with empathy, and to understand what someone may be holding physically and emotionally in order to help relieve their discomfort. It requires genuine intention, presence, and sensitivity, and I find that profoundly meaningful and deeply rewarding.

I created Aterfa to offer a more thoughtful way to recover, restore, and return to balance and I’d be delighted to welcome you when you feel ready.

Philosophy

To me, massage is not a generic service; it is a focused therapy and a personal art form. My practice is rooted in a deep belief in the therapeutic relationship. When we work together, we begin with breathwork to help ease physical tension and quiet the mind.

I believe there is a powerful exchange that happens through intentional human touch. I approach every session with the discipline of a martial artist and a strong healing intention, using positive energy to help your body recover, shift out of stress, restore its natural alignment, and move towards deeper healing.
